Gourd Bowls

Gourd Bowls

I like making gourd bowls without lids for the simple reason that I do not have worry about the matching lid; however, this is the only difference in the process between creating a gourd bowl with a lid versus one without.  The creation process can take from a couple of hours to several days, depending on the carving detail, the curing of inlace or epoxy if used etc.

Most of my bowls are made to be functional as well as pretty.  They can be used to hold non food items like jewelry, paperclips ,  or food items such nuts and wrapped candy. A tea towel can be inserted on the inside and then the bowl can be used as a serving container for crackers, bread etc.

When I waterproof a gourd, I use a 2 step exoxy that is food safe; the waterproofed bowl can then be used as a salad bowl.  Do mix salad dressing in with the salad as this will make cleaning the bowl harder. (Since soaking the inside of  my ‘gourdeous creation’ in water is not recommended.)  Clean the gourd bowl as you normally would a natural wooden bowl by using a damp cloth and running it all over the interior of the gourd. Let the bowl air dry.
